Statumania! Or How Britain Invented Public Sculpture. Wednesday 19th August 2009, 7pm

Benedict Read, FSA, Senior Fellow in the School of Fine Art at the University of Leeds, will give a talk on the origin and development of public statues in Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, arguing that you can forget the public art of Italy and France - the origin of public statuary as we understand it today was in Britain. The talk is at the Gibberd Gallery, Civic Centre, Harlow (Satnat: CM20 1WG), and all are welcome. The event is free and there is no need to book. Please arrive at least ten minutes early to take your seat. Presented in association with the Friends of Harlow Sculpture Collection.

Town Park Paddling Pool. Will Spankie’s new sculpture for the the Town Park paddling pool was
unveiled on 3 July 2009 by Councillor Sue Livings. The new work, entitled ‘Shoal’, was commissioned
through the collaboration of Harlow Renaissance, Essex County Council, Harlow Council, the Friends of
Harlow Sculpture and Harlow Art Trust.

Newhall Sculpture. The Harlow Art Trust and Newhall Projects Ltd are pleased to
announce that the German born artist Ekkehard Altenberger has been commissioned to
produce a sculpture for the Newhall development in Harlow. The new sculpture is due to be
unveiled in Spring 2010.

Harlow Sculpture Town Signs. Following approval by Harlow Council of the erection of new
brown tourist signs for ‘Harlow Sculpture Town’ on some of the major trunk roads in and around
Harlow, the formal application for the signs has now been submitted to the Tourism and the
Highways departments of Essex County Council. We hope to have good news on the signs in the
near future. The other good news is that the cost of the new signs is being met by private sources.
